Dr. James Prueter became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1973 from the Veterinary School at Ohio State University. He participated in the Residency Program in Veterinary Internal Medicine at Ohio State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 1975 – 1977. The residence was designed to meet the requirements established for certification by ACVIM. The program included rotation of ten-week intervals through the major subspecialty areas of veterinary internal medicine: neurology, cardiology, dermatology, hematology, nephrology, gastroenterology, anesthesia, and general internal medicine. Dr. Prueter’s special interests were cardiovascular and respiratory systems. At the end of this program he had successfully completed the ACVIM Board Qualification Examination for Internal Medicine and went on to successfully complete the ACVIM Board Certification Examination for Internal Medicine in 1981.
Dr. Prueter established the first multi-specialty referral practice in Northeast Ohio. In 1981 James Prueter became the owner/director of the Veterinary Referral Clinic in Cleveland Ohio. This multi-specialty referral practice focused on Internal Medicine, Oncology, Surgery, Radiology, and Dermatology. The VRC was the first and only facility to provide I-131 for hyperthyroid cats in Ohio; likewise it was the first to provide radiation therapy for cancer patients in the midwest. The referral practice was sold in 2002 as Dr. Prueter moved into the venue of Veterinary Consultation through his new company of Prueter and Associates, LLC. Being connected to his clients and their pets has prompted Dr. Prueter to return to general practice of small animal care, giving an added benefit of his expertise within internal medicine.
Dr. Prueter is an activist for education, animal welfare, and specialty practice collaborations. He began in 1981 by initiating, with assistance from Charles Parshall, DVM, ACVO, “Specialists in Practice of Ohio” forum at the Annual Ohio Veterinary Medical Conference to promote specialists in practice in Ohio. Continuing on in 1983, he initiated, with assistance from Ted Belhorn, DVM, ACVIM, the “Specialists in Practice” within the ACVIM Forum. This idea was to better “utilize” each specialist for both academic and business environments. In 2002, Dr. Prueter along with Marshfield Laboratories and Iam’s Company established the 1st Annual Veterinary Specialists in Practice Forum for Small Animal Practitioners and Practice Managers Seminar. His participation in the collaboration of the Shelter Medicine Specialty Group, organizing itself at the 2004 ACVIM Forum, has enhanced the effectiveness of Shelter Medicine and established board certification and residency programs within the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
On a personal level, Dr. Prueter shares his passions of education and animal welfare with the community through S.A.F.E., Safety for Animals and Families in Emergency, a non-profit group he co-established in 2002 that benefits abused spouses by providing fostering and care for their beloved pets while they, the owners, are transitioning from an abusive relationship to a healthy, safe environment. Dr. Prueter, along with Akron Veterinary Internal Medicine/Oncology Practice, Northeast Ohio Internal Medicine Associates, and Veterinary Surgery Services of Northeast Ohio are attempting to establish a Gratis-Discount Veterinary Specialty Program as a need-based service benefiting the Greater Cleveland area pet owners, city and county kennels, protection leagues, and shelters.
As a client, you will be deeply pleased by the straightforward, gentle care given by Dr. Prueter to your beloved pet. The same level of integrity, passion, and talent that is openly shared within the veterinarian community and general public is extended to the care and well-being of your pet. Dr. Prueter’s patients deserve the very best, and his intent is to give them his best plus more.
