Ask Dr. Prueter

Will fleas and ticks be a problem this summer?

Yes.  The 2012 summer season appears to be a difficult one due to the mild winter.  We have already seen cases of fleas which normally are not an issue until June or July. For those that live in rural areas or like to hike or camp, ticks are always a threat to your pet.  Owners should always check the head and neck. Keep in mind that Lyme disease is always a threat from ticks, particularly when traveling to the East Coast.

What is the truth about vaccinations?

The frequency of vaccinations has been in question for 30 years.  However, 12 years ago it was proven by multiple sources that annual vaccinations are detrimental to your pet’s health.  All vaccines should be tailored to your pet’s environment and social exposure.  Most require a 3 year program and older patients may only require a 6 year program.  The leptospirosis and bordetella vaccines are relatively poor vaccines and may require annual applications, pending exposure ie rural environment and/or boarding.
